How to Migrate from AWS S3 to QuixiCloud in Under 15 Minutes with Zero Downtime

When engineering organizations evaluate alternative object storage providers to eliminate punishing egress bandwidth fees and reduce cloud infrastructure overhead, the primary operational hesitation is almost always migration complexity:

How do we migrate hundreds of gigabytes or terabytes of production assets without interrupting live user traffic? Will we need to rewrite our application code?

Because QuixiCloud M-S3 is built on 100% standard AWS S3 API protocols, migrating your active data from Amazon S3 to QuixiCloud is straightforward, risk-free, and achievable with zero application downtime.

In this tutorial, we detail the complete migration playbook using the open-source utility Rclone, paired with an industry-standard dual-write zero-downtime cutover strategy.

The Zero-Downtime Migration Framework

To execute a migration without dropping a single file write or disrupting user sessions, we implement the classic 3-Stage Zero-Downtime Pipeline:

Stage 1: Bulk Baseline Replication
[ AWS S3 Bucket (Live Traffic) ] ── (Parallel Rclone Copy) ──> [ QuixiCloud M-S3 Bucket ]

Stage 2: Dual-Write & Delta Synchronization
[ App Backend ] ── Dual-Writes to BOTH AWS S3 & QuixiCloud ──> [ Incremental Rclone Sync ]

Stage 3: Seamless DNS / Environment Cutover
[ App Backend ] ── Points 100% to QuixiCloud M-S3 ──> [ Safely Decommission AWS S3 ]

Step 1: Install and Configure Rclone

Rclone is an enterprise-grade cloud synchronization tool capable of parallel multi-threaded streaming, automatic checksum hashing, and robust retry logic across S3 endpoints.

Install Rclone:

Install Rclone on your transfer host or local machine:

# Linux / macOS installation
curl https://rclone.org/install.sh | sudo bash

Configure Connection Profiles:

Generate your connection configurations by editing ~/.config/rclone/rclone.conf:

[aws-origin]
type = s3
provider = AWS
access_key_id = YOUR_AWS_ACCESS_KEY
secret_access_key = YOUR_AWS_SECRET_KEY
region = us-east-1

[quixicloud-destination]
type = s3
provider = Other
env_auth = false
access_key_id = YOUR_QUIXICLOUD_ACCESS_KEY
secret_access_key = YOUR_QUIXICLOUD_SECRET_KEY
endpoint = https://s3.quixicloud.com
region = us-east-1
acl = private

Step 2: Execute the High-Concurrency Baseline Copy

Trigger the primary data transfer from AWS S3 to your QuixiCloud bucket:

rclone copy aws-origin:production-media quixicloud-destination:production-media \
  --transfers 32 \
  --checkers 64 \
  --fast-list \
  --progress

High-Performance Tuning Flags:

  • --transfers 32: Streams up to 32 objects simultaneously across parallel network sockets.
  • --checkers 64: Spawns 64 concurrent threads to verify object metadata and ETags.
  • --fast-list: Utilizes high-efficiency S3 ListObjectsV2 pagination to scan directory structures rapidly while minimizing API request overhead.
  • --progress: Outputs real-time streaming throughput, transferred volume, and estimated time to completion.

Note: Your production application continues reading and writing to AWS S3 uninterrupted during this bulk copy.

Step 3: Implement Dual-Writing in Your Application

When the baseline transfer reaches ~95% completion, update your application backend to write new uploads to both AWS S3 and QuixiCloud M-S3 simultaneously:

// Example Node.js Backend Dual-Write Pattern
import { S3Client, PutObjectCommand } from "@aws-sdk/client-s3";

const awsClient = new S3Client({ region: "us-east-1" });
const quixiClient = new S3Client({
  endpoint: "https://s3.quixicloud.com",
  region: "us-east-1",
  credentials: {
    accessKeyId: process.env.QUIXICLOUD_KEY,
    secretAccessKey: process.env.QUIXICLOUD_SECRET,
  },
});

export async function uploadAsset(key, body, contentType) {
  // 1. Primary write to AWS S3 (current live origin)
  await awsClient.send(new PutObjectCommand({
    Bucket: "production-media",
    Key: key,
    Body: body,
    ContentType: contentType,
  }));

  // 2. Secondary write to QuixiCloud M-S3
  try {
    await quixiClient.send(new PutObjectCommand({
      Bucket: "production-media",
      Key: key,
      Body: body,
      ContentType: contentType,
    }));
  } catch (err) {
    console.warn("QuixiCloud shadow mirror non-blocking error:", err);
  }
}

This pattern ensures that any incoming files written during the migration window are safely replicated in both storage locations.

Step 4: Execute Delta Synchronization and Verification

Run an incremental sync to capture any objects written between the start of Step 2 and the activation of dual-writing:

rclone sync aws-origin:production-media quixicloud-destination:production-media \
  --transfers 32 \
  --checkers 64 \
  --fast-list \
  --checksum \
  --progress

Cryptographic Checksum Audit:

Run Rclone’s integrated verification command to confirm that all objects are byte-identical across both providers:

rclone check aws-origin:production-media quixicloud-destination:production-media

When complete, Rclone will confirm: 0 differences found, 0 errors, 100% matching.

Step 5: Final Production Cutover

With all assets verified and synchronized, execute the final cutover by updating your application’s environment configuration:

# .env.production
AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID=YOUR_QUIXICLOUD_ACCESS_KEY
AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY=YOUR_QUIXICLOUD_SECRET_KEY
AWS_REGION=us-east-1
AWS_ENDPOINT_URL=https://s3.quixicloud.com
S3_BUCKET_NAME=production-media

Deploy your configuration change. Your application now reads and writes 100% of its data through QuixiCloud M-S3:

  • Zero minutes of service disruption.
  • Zero lost user files.
  • Up to 3× included unmetered egress bandwidth.
  • Predictable, transparent monthly billing starting at $4.99/TB.
